PROMO MISSOURI RESPONDS TO EMERGENCY RULE ON GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE BY MISSOURI ATTORNEY GENERAL, ANDREW BAILEY

“It should be clear to anyone paying attention that the real threat to Missourians is the Attorney General himself”

ST. LOUIS (April 13, 2023) — On Thursday, April 13, the Missouri Attorney General released his emergency regulation on gender-affirming care that encompasses both transgender youth and adults. PROMO, Missouri’s LGBTQ+ public policy and advocacy organization, issued the following statement:

“During the first months since being appointed as Missouri’s Attorney General, Andrew Bailey has politicized his office by inserting himself into highly coordinated administrative, legislative, and alt-right media-driven attacks on transgender youth. His actions today fanned the flames of hate by including transgender adults’ ability to access care in his culture war.

“Let’s be clear — gender-affirming care is based on decades of clinical experience and research and is not considered experimental. The Attorney General’s claims are maliciously cherry-picked and come from unverified sources that allow him to promulgate disgusting, obstructive, and misleading information into an emergency rule. It should be clear to anyone paying attention that the real threat to Missourians is the Attorney General himself.

“As Rep. Jamie Johnson reflected on the House floor earlier this week, this legislative session we are all witness to discrimination and bigotry in action. Certain elected and appointed officials are intentionally silencing trans voices. They are intentionally not listening and they remain willfully ignorant as we’ve seen in the most recent hearing earlier this week in the House General Laws committee. Normalizing hate and fueling fear in this way has violent and deadly consequences whether that means robbing young people of life-saving healthcare or hindering transgender students’ ability to thrive by excluding them from team sports.

“We are living through an all out attack on transgender Missourian’s lives and very ability to exist. Known hate groups including the Alliance Defending Freedom are showing up in this coordinated attack across Missouri. Today is a sad day for Missouri and a devastating day for trangender and gender non-conforming Missourians. As advocates, parents, and Missourians who value personal freedom and inclusion, we will continue to fight attempts to erase transgender youth and adults.”
