PROMO Expands Staff by Two and Plans to Hire Four More

PROMO, MISSOURI’S LGBTQ+ POLICY AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION, ADDS TWO STAFF MEMBERS AND PLANS TO HIRE FOUR MORE BY SUMMER OF 2024

 

The nonprofit rebuilt from a staff of one person in 2022 following the pandemic to a staff of seven by the beginning of Q2 in 2024

 

ST. LOUIS (April 17, 2024) — PROMO, Missouri’s LGBTQ+ public policy and advocacy organization, welcomed two new individuals to its staff earlier this month. Nyla Foster (she/her) will represent the organization in the Greater Kansas City area, and Courtney Cook (she/her) solidifies the group’s presence in Springfield as the second hire in southwest Missouri.

Foster joins PROMO as the first ever Digital Equality Organizer, bringing her extensive background in community activism, transgender rights advocacy, and communications. She also holds multiple titles — Miss Missouri State, Miss Black Trans Kansas, and Miss Black Trans International — that she utilizes as platforms to advocate for change. In 2018, she was part of a pivotal lawsuit against the State of Kansas, fighting for the right of transgender individuals to have accurate birth certificates. 

“My journey has taken me across the Kansas-Missouri border, where I developed a unique blend of creativity and determination as a writer, artist, and activist,” said Foster. “This role aligns with my own passion for advocacy and commitment to equal rights, but I’m also honored to collaborate with my community to bring our stories to light and celebrate LGBTQ+ joy.”

Cook fills the position of Field Director as an engaged community activist, sitting on the Board of Directors at the GLO Center in Springfield and as President of the Board of Directors for Ujima Language and Literacy. She brings almost 13 years of experience within business operations managing large remote teams, creating and streamlining processes, and analyzing data. She will spearhead the launch of a deep canvassing initiative for PROMO expected to begin next month.

“It’s been my dream to work for an organization who utilizes their platform to uplift and fight for my community,” said Cook. “To be a part of a team who actively works every day to protect me, my family, and all individuals within our state — that’s a blessing. I’m joining this fight because every single Missourian should have access to the resources they need and be able to live a full life being their authentic selves.”

The growth of the statewide advocacy organization speaks directly to the dire realities of Missouri where, last year, two anti-trans bills were signed into law. Additionally, the number of filed anti-LGBTQ+ bills continues to climb each year nationwide and local communities are starting to see harmful policies within their local government agencies and school boards.

“Our expanded presence across Missouri increases the organization’s ability to be more deeply embedded in communities across the state,” said Katy Erker-Lynch (she/they), Executive Director of PROMO. “Missouri has a diverse and vibrant LGBTQ+ community and that is, in part, why the legislature is attacking us. So, as elected officials seek to strip LGBTQ+ folks of our power, PROMO’s growing team is working to build power in the capitol, in local communities, and in rural corners of the state through intentional digital advocacy. Our next group of hires consists of deep canvassers, who will ensure that we are able to have empathetic conversations with Missourians to show voters that we have more in common than we have that divides us. ”
