Week 5 (February 10-14, 2025)
We are a month into the legislative session and 35 anti-LGBTQ+ bills (26 of which are explicitly anti-trans) are moving through the legislature. This session’s attacks echo the callously spry Executive Orders flying off the White House printers.
And yet — our power and our passion is ever present.
TL;DR — Actions You Need to Take
Spread Love This Valentine’s Day
Spread love this Valentine’s Day season by sending an ecard to an LGBTQ+ loved one in your life when you make a donation in their honor! Your donation will also help us create testifying care kits that will help testifiers rest and recharge after confronting transphobia and hate.
Speak Out Against Bathroom & Drag Bans
On Tuesday, February 18, at 8 a.m., the Senate Education Committee will hear SB 212 (Fitzwater), which seeks to ban transgender youth from using school restrooms and locker rooms. The following day, Wednesday, February 19, at 8 a.m., the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear SB 295 (Brattin), a bill attempting to criminalize drag and theatrical performances where minors are present including Drag Queen Story Hours to beloved theater productions like Peter Pan and Hairspray. Join us and testify in person against these hateful bills!
Key Legislative Actions This Week
Updates on Previous Hearings
- On Monday last week, all seven anti-trans bills heard in the prior week within the House Emerging Issues Committee were voted out on party lines.
- On the following day, the Senate Education and Families, Seniors & Health Committees held back-to-back hearings on anti-LGBTQ+ bills, quickly pushing those forward with only a one-day pause.
Disinformation in the Legislature
For the second consecutive week, Jamie Reed, whose singular uneducated and discredited opinion has been puppeted around the country, was given a platform to spread misinformation. Sen. Mike Moon yielded his time around the bill to Reed to help him push further the blatant lies about gender-affirming care, ignoring the consensus of every major medical association — including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Endocrine Society.
Senator Moon’s inability to distinguish between life-saving medical care and his personal biases should be enough proof that politicians have no place interfering in best-practice healthcare decisions.
Sneaky Tactics: SB 10 and the Attack on Trans Youth
SB 10 (Hough) was originally a construction bill, something that would typically be of little concern to us. However, Republican lawmakers are using this unrelated bill to permanently ban gender-affirming care for trans youth by sneaking in an amendment that removes the sunset provision on Missouri’s trans healthcare ban. They were able to do this because SB 10 spoke about sunsets in the initial bill.
Dangerous Legislation Moving Forward
The House has also advanced HB 75 (Loy), the Missouri Religious Freedom Protection Act — a bill originally pushed in response to COVID-19 restrictions. This legislation would allow religious gatherings to ignore emergency health and safety measures, once again proving that Missouri leaders are prioritizing ideology over public safety.
