It’s LGBTQ History Month, and PROMO is proud to honor an organization in our state that has been unapologetically pushing forward for equality and progress in Missouri. LGBTQ History Month was first celebrated in 1994, founded by Missouri history teacher, Rodney Wilson. This month is set aside to bring awareness and visibility to those whom our movement stands on the shoulder of, and those who propel our movement further.

PROMO recognizes the importance of our collective movement, our vast community, and that not one person or organization champions this movement alone. Together, we work persistently to make Missouri a safer, more welcoming place for all of us to work, live, and raise a family. For that reason, this month we lift up the work of Cape Pride, Inc.

Cape Pride, Inc., is this year’s PROMO Champion of Community, and we are honored to recognize their work at our Brunch of Champions!

In its first-ever year ever, Cape Pride came out as a community of over 2,000 people, and 30 vendors, to celebrate each other’s authentic selves, and visibly express that LGBTQ folks are supported in Southeast Missouri. They exemplify how people can come together to affirm and create space for the LGBTQ community.

We specifically recognize Cape Pride, Inc.’s President, Amber Moyers. Amber has envisioned a pride festival for the Cape Girardeau area since she was a student at Southeast Missouri State University. As a student, she grew the LGBTQ Alliance community group and remained committed to building an inclusive Cape community after graduating. She worked tirelessly to expand Safe Space Cape, ensuring that all LGBTQ people have access to inclusive programming. And on top of that volunteer work, organized the first-ever Cape Pride. Her passion for creating change in the place she and her family call home is contagious.

We see you Cape Girardeau, we thank you Amber Moyers, and we honor you Cape Pride, Inc.
