PRIDE IN POLITICS: RED MISSOURI SEES LARGEST SLATE OF OUT LGBTQ+ CANDIDATES IN YEARS ON 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF STONEWALL UPRISING

Ten candidates are running for state office, three for re-election into the House or Senate, and St. Louis sees its first nonbinary candidate for 3rd Ward Committee Person

ST. LOUIS (June 23, 2024) — PROMO, Missouri’s LGBTQ+ public policy and advocacy organization, announces the largest slate of out LGBTQ+ candidates in years as the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising approaches on Friday, June 28. Ten candidates are running to secure a seat within the House of Representatives, three incumbents are running for re-election (Rep. Jamie Johnson for House District 12, Rep. Chris Sander for House District 33, and Rep. Ian Mackey for House District 99), and Rep. Phil Christofanelli is running for Senate District 23. These candidates and incumbents will represent areas across the state including Fayette, Jefferson City, Lone Jack, Kansas City, Springfield, O’Fallon, and St. Louis. Additionally, Maxi Glamour (they/them) entered the race for the City of St. Louis 3rd Ward Committee-person making them the city’s first out nonbinary candidate.

“As we approach the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the visibility and leadership that Black and Brown trans community members displayed is what the community aspires to channel every day,” said Katy Erker-Lynch (she/they), Executive Director of PROMO. “Visibility of LGBTQ+ Missourians has never been more important than in recent years as our state government continuously attacks us. Our elected officials file bills that attempt to strip us of our rights, deny our existence, and write us out of state law — these 15 candidates are out, proud, and over it.”

A full list of out LGBTQ+ candidates in Missouri is below and we encourage you to reach out to campaigns for any candidate comments. For more information about PROMO, visit our website.
