April 14-23
With three and a half weeks left of Missouri’s legislative session, our rights — and the rights we voted for last year — are under coordinated attack. Lawmakers are pushing bills that would strip away paid sick leave from Prop A, aiming to make permanent the bans on gender-affirming healthcare and trans athletes, and force our public institutions to use taxpayer money to fund discrimination.
However, We Are Fighting Back Hard
TL;DR — Actions You Need to Take
Sign Up to Phone Bank: Our coalition partner, Missouri Jobs with Justice, has power hour phone banks on Tuesdays from 12-1 p.m. throughout the last three weeks of session. We encourage you to sign up and ensure lawmakers respect the will of the people on Proposition A — April 29, May 6, May 13.
A Deeper Look: 9-Hour Filibuster
Last week, Senate Democrats held the floor for nine hours to stall HB 567 (R-Gallick). This bill aims to overturn the voter-approved guaranteed paid sick leave protections passed under Proposition A. Senators Doug Beck, Patty Lewis, Karla May, Tracy McCreery, Angela Mosley, Maggie Nurrenbern, Steve Roberts, Barbara Washington, Stephen Webber, and Brian Williams fought fiercely to protect the will of the people until the Senate adjourned around 1 a.m. the next day. As of the writing of the email, debate is currently happening on the Senate floor.
We asked you on Friday to share your stories with us about how families are not defined by legal paperwork after Senate President Cindy O’Laughlin said paid sick leave should only be available and used by those in marriages or domestic partnerships. Your stories inspire our elected leaders to remember they’re fighting on behalf of real people, and help frame multiple arguments for why earned paid sick leave is important for all employees. You’re still able to share your stories with us to help hold the line!
A Deeper Look: Hearings This Week
HJR 73 (R-Lewis): Overturning Amendment 3
Passed the House and could be scheduled for a Senate committee hearing as early as next week. The goal of this bill is to overturn the will of the people, yet again, attacking the constitutional, voter-approved amendment ending Missouri’s abortion ban. Lawmakers know their constituents want this, so they are inserting bill language that will also ban gender-affirming healthcare for youth. We can still stop this bill from advancing in the Senate, and we’re doing everything we can to do so.
HB 875 (R-Chappel): Taxpayer Funded Discrimination on Campuses
This morning, the Senate Education Committee heard HB 875 that would force colleges and universities to use taxpayer funds to support student groups that discriminate against other students based on political or religious beliefs. We’re working diligently to remind Senators they amended the Senate version of this bill and should do the same to this version. Thank you to student leaders and partner organizations who testified against this bill with us today.
What We’re Watching
With only three full weeks remaining in session, we are actively engaging with multiple bills on the chamber calendars to protect LGBTQ+ rights in Missouri. Here are the two bills we are actively watching right now:
SB 100 (R-Cierpiot): Blocking Gender Marker Changes
Nearing floor debate in the Senate. This cruel bill bans trans Missourians from updating their birth certificates. We’re meeting directly with lawmakers and sharing stories from the community to stop it.
SB 10 (R-Hough): Design-Build Bill Loaded with Sunsets, including Trans Rights
Listed up for executive session in House Legislative Rules Committee, yet has not been voted on. Many representatives, including Ranking Minority Committee Member, Rep. Doug Clemens, are ready to push their colleagues to amend this bill in order to remove the sunsets on gender-affirming care and trans youth sports, which would make those current bans permanent.
